William Wayne Decker joined his beloved wife, Susan Louise Decker, in heaven on July 17, 2024, after an extended illness. His final days were filled with the love and presence of family, who cherished this precious time. Though comforted by their company, Bill deeply missed his wife.
Born on December 21, 1935, in Ottumwa, Iowa, Bill was the youngest of five siblings, all of whom preceded him in death. After serving three years in the Army, he attended Northeast Missouri State University, majoring in Business. He began his career as an insurance adjuster with AAA in Clinton, Iowa, where he soon met Susan Christiansen. They married in October 1964 and were blessed with three sons: Jeffrey, Thomas, and Michael.
In 1973, the Decker family settled in Davenport, IA. Bill remained with AAA until 1991 before joining Pilot Catastrophe Inc., where he worked on catastrophe claims nationwide. This role allowed him and Susan to travel extensively across the U.S., creating countless memories together. Davenport became a true home for the Decker family, where they formed lifelong friendships and welcomed all into their warm and loving home environment.
Bill had a passion for golf and proudly earned a hole-in-one on a 227-yard par 3. It was a good day. A diehard Hawkeye fan, he rarely missed a game and had a general love for sports, always catching the big games. Along with his wife, they enjoyed traveling across the world and had the opportunity to visit many places, with New Zealand being one of his favorites. In retirement, they continued their adventures travelling to many countries abroad. While at home, he enjoyed playing as many golf matches as he could. He had a big group of golf buddies that he truly enjoyed.
Bill's sons were his pride and joy, and he often spoke fondly of his time with them. Known for his integrity and humility, Bill lived a life of kindness. His brilliant and understated sense of humor was cherished by those who knew him well.
Bill is survived by his three sons and their spouses: Jeffrey (Matt), Thomas (Gustavo), and Michael (Krista); and his beloved grandchildren, Jake, Ben, and Emma; and his beloved dog, Eddie.
Visitation will be at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home 614 Main St Davenport, IA 52803 on Sunday from 2 – 4pm. With the funeral service being Monday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral 121 Main St in Davenport, IA 52803 at 10:30am.
