Wayne E. Stechmann, 90, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. He was a loving husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, and dear friend to many.
Wayne was born May 15, 1934, to Herman and Laura (Klehn) Stechmann. Wayne met the love of his life, Patricia Ann Kurop (Patty), in Davenport. The two high school sweethearts united in marriage November 24, 1956, and were blessed to have spent the last 68 years together in marriage. The couple resided in Davenport all their lives where they raised their two children, Michael and Kelly.
Wayne proposed marriage to Patty in 1954; that same year he paused his carpenter apprenticeship in order to volunteer for the United States Army (1954 -1956), during which time he was stationed in Germany. Upon returning home, the couple were united in marriage at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Davenport and at the age of 23, Wayne built their family home where he lived until his passing. Wayne was a very proud and talented union carpenter. He retired in 1996 and was a 72 year member of Carpenter’s Local Union 4. Wayne taught carpenter apprenticeship classes for 23 years and was a great mentor and friend to many. He was well respected for his skill, dedication and work ethic.
In his spare time, Wayne enjoyed spending time outdoors with Patty tending to their yard and flower gardens. He most enjoyed spending time with his family; especially, his three grandsons. Always the supportive father and grandfather, he coached several of his children’s teams and never missed a school or sporting event. Wayne always had a smile on his face and was said to have “never met a stranger”. He was strong in faith and many times provided stewardship to his Parish, Holy Family Catholic Church. Wayne was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Celebrating his long life are his wife, Patty; children Michael (Jill) Stechmann and Kelly (Tim) Rouse; grandsons Cory Stechmann, Aaron Stechmann and Addam (Cassidy) Rouse; great grandson Truett Rouse; sister Nancy MacDonald; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Lorraine Ryder and Delores Murray.
