Virginia Lazio, 90, of Davenport, affectionately known to her friends as “Sam” and her family as “Gigi”, passed away Friday, May 31, 2024, at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, June 7, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. Inurnment will follow at 2:30 pm on Friday at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice.
Virginia Mae Lazio was born February 5, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, a daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Mascari) Lazio. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Iowa and had been a reporter for the Quad City Times prior to her retirement.
She loved listening to jazz music and attending the Bix Jazz Festival. She was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and loved cats, especially her beloved “Rocky”.
Survivors include nieces Joanne Hasselbrink of Cedar Rapids, Linda O’Brien of Las Vegas; several great nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Charles, sisters Anne Ebeling and Marguerite Scolaro, nephew Robert Ebeling, and nieces Judy Simonsen and Nancy Ebeling.
The family would like to thank and acknowledge the nurses and staff of Ridgecrest and Genesis Hospice for the wonderful care given to Gigi over the years.
