Vancel Muir

d. August 9, 2020

Vancel Ray Muir, 76, East Moline, formerly of Burlington, Iowa, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2020  at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.  He was born in Scotland Co. Missouri and was a graduate of Dallas City High School 1962.  He served his country in the US Navy in Pensacola, FL from 1962-1966 as a Corpsman and was once awarded Sailor of the month. He then worked at the Iowa State Penitentiary, Reynolds, and Best Office Supply Stores, and eventually retired from Vista Bakery, Burlington.

Vancel was married to Kathy Murphy Muir, West Burlington from 1976-1985 and later wed Linda Kay Herman, Conor, Friedel May 31, 1991 in Burlington.

“Vancel Ray Bob” had the best sense of humor, was full of sarcasm, and he was never a stranger to anyone.  He thoroughly enjoyed heckling telemarketers. There wasn’t an animal around that didn’t frequent his yard for food, or seed.  He was purely happy to provide for all of the “Critters”.  He was a huge animal lover and fed every stray cat in a 10 mile radius.  Vancel played the lottery for years, and he was a sucker for a sale, always yielding a coupon, while wearing one of his many funny quote T-Shirts.  He loved hard, and he loved deep, and was an incredible caregiver for his wife. He cherished his grandchildren and was always dancing and being goofy with them.  He will be greatly missed by his lifelong friends Dennis Sly & Gary Collins of Lomax, IL Without a doubt, he is already enjoying either Vodka/Squirt or Kessler, and his Pall Mall Studs.

Vancel was preceded in death by his parents, Hobart Muir and M Louise (Fletcher) Muir Buxton & (step father Bryan), his grandparents, half siblings, Vilas & Venus Muir, and stepson Mike Conor.

Vancel is survived by his loving wife, Linda; stepchildren Jeff Friedel, Burlington, Shelly Friedel, Wapello, Gary Conor, Burlington and Kelly Baumer, (Terry) of Davenport;  half-sister Virginia Colgan (Robert) of Bradford, IL;  grandchildren Justin Conor, Jory Conor, Megan Roth (Josh), Ryan Baumer (Kaylee)  and great-grandchildren Jameson, Noah, Charli, Rylie, Kallie, Griffin and Walker,  along with many nieces and nephews.

Per his wishes, there will be no services, and his body was willed to The University of Iowa Department of Anatomy.  Memorials are welcomed for the Des Moines County Humane Society, Compassus Hospice, and Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.
