Terry Tingwald

February 24, 1938 — February 27, 2020

Terry Tingwald, 82, of Moline, formerly of Davenport, passed away, Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Heartland Health Care Moline.  Terry donated his body to the Deeded Body Program of the University of Iowa, to improve the medical care of future generations. Arrangements are through Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. On May 31, 2022, he was laid to rest in a family plot in Boone, IA.  Memorials may be made to the Center for Active Seniors, Inc. (CASI), Davenport, IA; or Harmony Foundation International, Nashville, TN.

Terry was born on February 24, 1938, the first child of Arnold and Mildred (Summey) Tingwald.  He was united in marriage to Sally Lind in 1959 and they later divorced.  From that union they had two children, Lisa and David.

Terry attended the University of Iowa 1956-1960, and in June 1960 was conferred the degree, Bachelor of Science, with major in Pharmacy. He was a “Proud Hawkeye”.  Terry's first job as a pharmacist was for Schlegel Drug, he later owned Walcott Clinic Pharmacy, and he retired from Hy-Vee.

He had a love for music, especially singing, that spanned his lifetime.  Terry was a 57-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society -- the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA) -- and twice competed at its International Contest and Convention, in 1970 and 1971, as a member of the Davenport Chordbusters Barbershop Chorus, which he joined in 1962 and remained a member until his death.  Terry sang in a number of quartets, most notably for 26 years as a member of the barbershop quartet, A Touch of Fun, whose members, and their spouses, became part of Terry's extended family; as well as Free Association, the vocal jazz quartet Whatever 4, and other groups that are lost to memory.  He had served as Assistant Director and Interim Director of the Chordbusters, Director of the Rock Island men's barbershop chorus, now called Harminators; and as Director of a women's barbershop chorus, Multi Chords.  “Terry was a good barbershopper.”

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Lisa (Bill) Linville, Phoenix, AZ, and David Tingwald, Iowa City, IA; grandchildren, Jeremy (Carolyn) Linville, and their children, Miles and Penny, Phoenix, AZ,  and Daniel (Erin) Linville, and their child, Colton, Phoenix, AZ; brother, John (Joyce) Tingwald, Phoenix, AZ; sister-in-law, Linda Tingwald, San Antonio, TX; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; his significant other, Eileen Sellers, Moline, and her siblings, Dean (Ann) Sellers, Cara (Scott) Rusk, and Bruce Sellers, with whom Terry shared many family holidays; his A Touch of Fun Family; and many loving barbershoppers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Nancy, who was Terry’s playmate in the barbershop hobby before her illness; brother, Jim, who took over as big brother as Terry’s health declined; and brother, Robert “Bobby,” Terry’s first sibling who died in 1943.
