Susan Elizabeth (Arp) von Maur, 86 of Davenport, Iowa and Naples, Florida died May 11, 2023 at her home in Naples surrounded by family.
Susan was born March 19,1937 in Moline, Illinois, a daughter of Dr. August Henry and Elsa (Mauritzson) Arp. She graduated from St. Katharine’s School and continued her education at Sarah Lawrence Women’s College in New York.
Susan married her childhood friend, Richard Baldwin von Maur, Jr. son of Richard and Elsie (Wood) von Maur on June 14, 1958 in Moline, Illinois. Sue and Dick honeymooned in Naples, Florida and later returned to make it their winter home. They remained best friends for 60 years, until his death on October 13, 2018.
Sue’s life revolved around her husband, children, grandchildren, family, and friends. Her thoughtfulness was expressed through prolific note writing and small gestures of kindness. She supported the Quad City community with grace by serving on the boards of The Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, The Quad City Symphony, Tri City Garden Club, Trinity Cathedral Altar Guild, and most recently, she was designated Director Emeritus of The Deanery School of Music.
Sue and Dick loved entertaining. From casual picnics to elegant dinner parties, Sue was the consummate hostess who always added her personal touch. They treasured their time traveling with friends and family, but she was happiest at her home and in her garden in Davenport.
Those left to honor her memory include daughters Robin (Lee) Staak, Iowa City, Iowa, Susan (Holly) Grimm, Naples, Florida, sons Richard III (Doreen) Bluffton, South Carolina and James (Melissa) Davenport, Iowa
She was Mor Mor to her 11 grandchildren, Allison (Cody) Kriegel, John (Betsy) Staak, Bennett Grimm, Melanie (Dave) Ronning, Catherine Grimm, Justice, Elizabeth and Richard IV von Maur, J.D., Ana and Otto von Maur. Great grandchildren, Vivienne, Casper and Barrett Kriegel, Elsie and Erik Ronning and Jack Staak. She is also survived by her brother David Arp as well as her many nieces and nephews.
Susan was preceded in death by her sister Catherine Waterman and brother Henry Arp.
The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers and doctors for their loyalty and compassion.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 24th at 4:00 p.m. at Trinity Cathedral, 121 West 12th Street, Davenport, Iowa. Private burial will be at Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. A Celebration of life will be held in Naples in the future. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that expressions of sympathy be made to; The Richard and Susan von Maur Scholarship Fund at Trinity Cathedral, Davenport, Quad City Symphony, Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Davenport, or a charity of your choice.
