Funeral services to celebrate the life of Steven F. Soppe, 68, of Davenport will be Noon Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 N. Main St, Davenport. Burial will take place in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island with military honors. The family will greet friends Wednesday from 10:00 am until Noon at the funeral home. Steve passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at his home in the care of his loving wife and daughters. Memorials may be made to his family.
Steven Frederick Soppe was born on November 7, 1949 in Cedar Rapids, a son of Frederick H. and Carol J. (McCallister) Soppe. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Alice Ryan on January 12, 1974 in Davenport. They recently celebrated their 44th Anniversary with a Tombstone pizza and Whiteys ice cream. In earlier years he competed in go kart racing with numerous victories. He then moved on to modified dirt track racing at local tracks. Steve had worked as a mechanic for the City of Davenport for 30 years before retiring in 2005. After his retirement he enjoyed working in the garage on his 31 Chevy, which he proudly drove in the Veterans Day Parades, attending car shows, perfecting his model train empire, and spending time with his favorite play pals Aaliyah, Chris, and Major. He also enjoyed listening to classic rock and roll, maybe even a new song now and then, and bargain shopping for antique toys, model cars, and just a good deal in general. Any time he could work on a new project he was a happy man. Especially woodworking and handcrafting buildings and scenery for his train room.
Steve will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Alice, his daughters Caitlin (Christopher Minor) Soppe, and Lauren (Kyle Hurry) Soppe, all of Davenport; grandchildren: Aaliyah, Christopher Jr, and Major T. Minor; and his best friend and protector, his dog Fritz along with many close friends and fellow antique and classic car enthusiasts. If it had 4 wheels and a motor he was into it.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carol, Frederick, stepfather Edwin Skladzien, and a brother Wayne Soppe. The family would like to give special thanks to Genesis Hospice and Dr. Regan Cone and her staff for the great care and support through this difficult journey.
