Shirley (Schweiters) Salzer, 73, of Davenport, died Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.
Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 19, 2023 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be held Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at church. Memorials may be made to the family. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Shirley was born on September 14, 1949, the fourth child of Urban and Leone (Hartman) Schwieters in Davenport, Iowa. She graduated from Assumption High School in 1967 and Marycrest College in 1971. She married James M. Salzer August 9, 1986 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Davenport and they were blessed by three children.
She was employed as a pre-school and music teacher at St. Alphonsus School, as office manager at the Putnam Museum and as an administrative assistant for Grace and Faith United Methodist Church in Davenport for over 30 years, retiring in 2020.
Shirley cherished the time she spent with her family. She enjoyed gardening and watch reality shows especially the Masked Singer and America’s Got Talent.
She is survived by her husband Jim, children: Michelle (Tony) O’Connell, Park View, Iowa, Evan Salzer, and Allison (Justin) Schutter, all of Davenport, and grandchildren, Gage, Lilac, and Harper; a sister, Sr. Nancy Schwieters CHM, Johnston, Iowa; in-laws, Carol Salzer and Robert O’Hare and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Mary Sue O’Hare, brother, John Schwieters and in-laws Linda and Ken Talbot, Joyce and Bill Sterling, Laverne Salzer.
