A Memorial Mass for Sarah M. "Sally" Ploehn, 90, of Davenport, will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2022, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. The Mass will be livestreamed by clicking the following link: SACRED HEART YOUTUBE CHANNEL Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. The family will greet friends Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass in the gathering space at the Cathedral. Memorials may be made to Jane’s place at CASI or the Alzheimer’s Association. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mrs. Ploehn died peacefully Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at Crest Health Care, Ridgecrest Village, Davenport. She was surrounded by family at the time of her passing.
Sarah Marie Orr was born on December 9, 1931, in Davenport, daughter of Loras and Alma (Gavin) Orr. She spent her formative years at Cork Hill in Davenport assisting her family in the management of the Shamrock Tavern. She and her lifelong friend, Patty Kakert spent their early years enjoying the Irish/Italian neighborhood. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1949. Sally was united in marriage to C. Decker Ploehn in 1951 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Decker preceded her in death on March 26, 1996.
Sally started her work career with Northwestern Bell and was fortunate enough to stay home and raise her children. Sally returned to work as a bookkeeper for Osteopathic Hospital, then as a salesperson for Montgomery Ward, and finished her work career as a social worker for Iowa East Central Train in Davenport.
Sally was a longtime member and officer of the Daughters of Isabella in Davenport. She was a strong Irish Catholic mother who instilled in her children a strong sense of duty, honor, humor, and work ethic. She loved a family gathering and would often be found teaching family traditions to the youngest of the family. As stern of a mother, she was, Mom would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need.
Survivors include her children: Genevieve “Ginny” LeMaster, Iowa City, Elizabeth “Cotty” (Mike) Walsh, Iowa City and Margaret “Maggie” (Shawn) Powers, Coal Valley, IL; sons, Decker (Jayne), Bettendorf, Michael (Michele), Davenport, Matthew (Donna), Chandler, AZ, Loras “Ordy” (Lori), Grand Junction, CO, Andrew ”Andy” (Lisa), Bettendorf, Douglas (Denise), Davenport and Mark (Karla), Bettendorf; a sister, Kathryn “Kate” Oliver, Davenport, a sister-in-law, Mary Sue Orr, Davenport, 21 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa, a grandson, William “Billy”, and a sister Mary Eloise Funk: brother’s John “Jack” Orr, James “Jimmy” Orr, sister in law Jane Orr and brother’s in law Richard “Dick” Funk, Gene Oliver. May they rest in peace.
The family would like to “Thank the Angels” and caregivers at Ridgecrest skilled care unit for their care of Sally the last two and a half years as well as those at Jane’s place at CASI.
