Sally J. (Sturms) Grant, loving mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on June 25, 2022 at the age of 85 at her home in Blue Grass, Iowa after an extended battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome.
She was born to John and Leona Myers on February 5th, 1937.
She married Donald Sturms in 1960, later divorced but remained life-long friends.
Sally took her first cake decorating class at JC Penny’s to make a birthday cake for one of her daughters. Her talent and joy of creating cakes lead her to open Sally’s Sugar Shack in Blue Grass, Iowa. Over the years, she worked with many brides creating that special moment. Later giving up her frosting, tubes and turntable for a personnel desk at Montgomery Wards.
Sally married Thomas Grant of Durant, Iowa in 1993. They enjoyed traveling and spending time in the kitchen canning the treasures from the garden until his death in 2010. Her favorite joy in the world were her grandchildren, attending their soccer games, recitals, bowling tournaments, hosting bingo nights and teaching them the art of canning, cake decorating and creating Gingerbread houses with no kit needed. Each moment she spent with them was a moment to remember.
In following Sally’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is honored to serve the family. A memorial service will be held at the Blue Grass Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 4:00pm. There will be a visitation prior to the service at 3:00pm. A luncheon will follow at the Blue Grass Community Club. Memorials can be made to Kings Harvest Animal Shelter in memory of Sally.
Her children will miss her dearly: Duane (Nedra) Isenberg of Utica, New York, Sharon (David) Jungjohann of Bettendorf, Judith (Mike) Negus of Townsend, Tennessee, Donna (Rick) Porter of Blue Grass, Derek (Sue) Grant or Davenport, and Alexandra (Alasdair) Lowden of Edinburgh, Scotland.
