Russ was born September 2, 1935, in Burlington, IA, the son of Albert and Dema (Stevenson) Rommel.  He earned his master’s degree in education from Western Illinois University.  While he was teaching 6th grade at Horace Mann Elementary in Rock Island, he met Marilyn “Mim” Richardson who was teaching 1st grade. They were married on August 10, 1963, at St. Alphonsus.

Russ eventually became a guidance counselor, first at Wilson Jr High in Moline and later at Moline High School from which he retired.  While at Moline he cofounded the “Natural Helpers of Moline High School” which encouraged students to look out for and help their classmates.

Family and faith were important to him.  He enjoyed following his son’s activities and could often be found coaching their teams from Little League up to Colt League.  More recently he could be found cheering on his grandchildren in all their endeavors.  At church he helped with the annual Lenten Fish Fry and was the former Finance Director.  He was also a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.

In his younger years he served in the National Guard, a member of the Coal Valley Volunteer Fire Department and the President of the QC Fans Association.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Marilyn; sons Kevin (Tracy) Rommel of Davenport and Brian (Amy) Rommel of Council Bluffs, IA; grandchildren Kyle (Catherine) Rommel, Lauren (Adam) Beck, Keaton, McKenna, and Rylee Rommel; and great grandchildren Dean and Ivy.

“A life well lived.”

He was preceded in death by his parents.
