Funeral services for Robert V. Smith, 95, of Davenport, will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10 until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Handicapped Development Center or the Scott County Humane Society. Mr. Smith died Monday, June 27, 2022 at Genesis East, Davenport.
Robert Vernon Smith was born on March 7, 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska, a son of Vernon Robert and Ione Winifred (Rich) Smith. He was lettered in three sports at North High School in Omaha and attended University of Nebraska-Omaha. He proudly served our country in the Army Air Corps, later called the Air Force from June of 1945 until May of 1948, primarily stationed in Germany.
Mr. Smith worked at the Rock Island Arsenal for various commands. He retired in 1983 after 34 years of service.
Robert was also a strong advocate for his son Craig and was part of the parent’s group at Handicapped Development Center. He was fond of cats, usually having two at a time in the house. He also enjoyed golf and travelling, especially to Europe and Ireland.
Survivors include his children: Cynthia Kothenbeutel, Davenport, Craig Smith, and Michael (Kathleen) Smith, all of Bettendorf; grandchildren: Joey (Kat) Kothenbeutel, Seattle, Washington, Kristin Jones, Chesterfield, Michigan, and Jared Smith, Bettendorf; great-grandchildren: Leyla and Amaya Jones and Cooper Kothenbeutel.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, John Kothenbeutel, his parents and siblings Shirley Therkildsen, Jean Malm, and Gordon Smith. May they rest in peace.
