Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Richard “Dick” Schillig, 78, of Bettendorf, IA will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, October 1st, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, IA, and will begin with a prayer service at 4 p.m. There will be an additional visitation on Wednesday at the church from 10:30 am until the time of services. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carl D. Schillig Memorial Fund Inc. C/O Craig Schillig 2535 Tech Dr. Ste 310 Bettendorf, IA 52722. 

 

Dick passed away Friday, September 20, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital after a brief illness. Born to Paul and Blanche (Frank) Schillig on October 3, 1945, in Alliance, OH, Dick was raised on a dairy farm and learned the meaning of hard work early in life. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Mount Union (Ohio) and a Master of Science in Education, at Brockport University, NY. He married Juanita Valentine on October 23, 1971, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maximo, OH. 

 

Dick was a financial advisor and CLU, ChFC, LUTC, for 46 years. He and his son, Craig, partnered in RJS & Associates Inc. in Bettendorf. He was a member of NAIFA for over 20 years, and CBRC for over 30 years. He also hosted the “Safe Money” radio show on WOC 1420 for the past 15 years. 

 

As a philanthropist and active volunteer in his church and community, over the years Dick served as lector, board member of the Catholic Endowment of Bettendorf, and member of the finance council of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. At the time of his passing, he was a member of Bettendorf Rotary and Cornbelt Running Club. He continued the Post-Challenger Club with the Summit Boys and was Run With Carl's co-founder and race director for 20 years. Run With Carl continues today, held every Labor Day. 

 

Dick will be lovingly remembered as incredibly thoughtful of others, generous, and kind. His smile was welcoming and his friendly, helpful nature allowed him to make friends easily. He was an avid reader, especially books about history. He and Juanita traveled extensively, his favorite vacation spot was Lake of the Ozarks, MO. 

 

Those left to honor his memory are his loving family, including his wife, Juanita, his son, Craig (Renee Eickman) Schillig, and daughter Carey (Lucas) Voss. His siblings include Mary (Bill) Bernower, Bill (Michelle) Schillig, Tom Schillig, Judy (Dave) Gabric, Chuck (Susan) Schillig, and executive assistant Kevin Ketelsen; many nieces, nephews, family members, and great friends. 

 

He was preceded in death by his son Carl, parents, stepmother Edna, brother John, sister in-law Colette, and nephew, David Schillig.
