Richard Francis “Dick” Carpenter, 97, died Sunday, October 13, 2019 at Senior Star, Davenport surrounded by family. Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Richard Francis was born on April 3, 1922, a son of John and Frances (Haines) Carpenter. He was a lifelong resident of Freeport until moving to Davenport, Iowa in 2017. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1940. Dick served in the US Navy from 1940 until 1946, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He returned home to Freeport and married Jeanette Christen in 1950. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Freeport.
Dick was employed at Honeywell in Freeport, and was a pioneer in the field of computer operations, becoming one of the company’s first systems analysts. He retired in 1985.
Dick loved golf, and was a regular at Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport. In retirement, Richard loved to tinker and was a true handyman around the house. He enjoyed books and spent many hours at the Freeport Public Library.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, daughters, Christine (Terry) Lorenz, Bluffton, South Carolina, and Susan (Ron) Stalder, Davenport; grandchildren: Phillip, Blake (Sarah), Rachel, and Troy (Danielle), and two great-grandchildren: Nicholas and Oliver.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings: Gladys, Mardy, John, Catherine, and Thomas "Pat". May they rest in peace.
