Raymond Lee McConoughey, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the age of 93. Inurnment will be at 1:30pm on Friday, April 5, 2024, at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Those wishing to attended should meet in the parking lot of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf, at 1pm. Additionally, there will be a celebration of his life held at the Boll’s Community Center, in Princeton, Iowa on Saturday, April 6 from 12-3pm. Ray was born August 6th, 1930, in Moline, Illinois to Owen and Genevieve (Fry) McConoughey. He graduated from East Moline High School, then served in the army during the Korean conflict. Following his service, he attended the Burlington School of Beauty in Burlington, Iowa, where he met his wife of 67 years, Mary Jo Reed. They were married in The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Carthage, Illinois in 1956. Ray and his brother Don owned and operated Don-Ray Hair Styles in Bettendorf, Iowa for many years. During the late 1970’s, the two brothers designed and built the Walcott Mobile Home Park themselves, which they owned and operated until retirement.
Ray remained busy in retirement. He was co-owner of Soap-E-Suds Car Wash in Bettendorf for several years. He was a member of the Bettendorf VFW Post 9128, and was a competitive pistol shooter, competing in several national championships. He also enjoyed golfing and outings to The Quad City Downs with his brother and friends.
In addition to spending time with his children and grandchildren, Ray loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with his family on many camping trips in the area. Other than time spent with his family, his favorite hours were spent on the Mississippi and Rock rivers.
Raymond is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Mary Jo, his children Jana (John) Klein, of Mount Vernon, Greg (Margaret) McConoughey, of Le Claire, Lora (John) Cook, of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Julie McConoughey, of Sagle, Idaho, and his grandchildren Maxwell Klein, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Joseph (Kaitlyn) Klein, of Lisbon, Renny Klein, of Iowa City, Audrey (Kevin) Coxford, of South Lyon, Michigan, Kelly Jo McConoughey, of Bellingham, Washington, Grant Cook, of Neenah, Wisconsin, Sydney Cook, of Appleton, Wisconsin, Claire Cook, of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Hazel Cook, of Appleton, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his daughter Lori Jo, his parents, and his brothers Vince, Joe, Jack, and his identical twin Don McConoughey.
