Rafael Calzada-Herrera, affectionately known as Fay, was born on January 8, 1966, in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. He passed away on August 29, 2024, in Iowa City, Iowa. Rafael was a beloved husband to Maria Magdalena Calzada-Casillas and a devoted father to his five children: Lourdes Janett, Rafael Omar, Alejandra, Brenda Saharai, and Nancy Berenize; and four grandchildren: Amari, Maxwell, Ximena, and Roman. He was also cherished by his parents, Rafael Calzada-Rameño and María del Refugio Calzada along with siblings Adriana Sorenson, Lourdes Gutierrez, Lucia Montaño, and Arturo Calzada. Fay was known for his warmth, big heart, and vibrant personality, making him the life of every gathering. His passions included playing soccer with his family, watching Chivas games, and enjoying cookouts at the park. He had a special love for culinary delights, particularly ceviche, albondigas, and fajitas, which he often shared with those he loved. His music taste was eclectic which reflected his personality and some of his favorite artists included Michael Jackson, Queen, Bruno Mars, Michael Bublé, Grandmaster Flash, and Leo Dan. Fay was the biggest admirer of sci-fi movies, with his favorite being Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
A natural engineer and skilled craftsman who lovingly worked with his hands and wood for 14 years as a pattern maker. He leaves behind a legacy of joy, love, and cherished memories, and will be missed deeply by all who knew him.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am, Friday, September 6, 2024 at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Inurnment will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens.
