Funeral services celebrating the life of Melvin R. McDowell, 65, of Davenport, will be at 10am on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. The funeral service will be livestreamed and may be viewed by visiting Mr. McDowell’s obituary at www.hmdfuneralhome.com. Burial will follow at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, with military honors. Visitation will be from 9am until time of service at the funeral home.
Mr. McDowell passed away Monday, December 13, 2021, at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street Campus, Davenport.
Melvin R. McDowell was born September 19, 1956, in Miami, FL, the son of Shedrick, Sr. and Frances (Hall) McDowell. His educational experiences where received from the Miami Dade County Public Schools system; finishing from South Dade Senior High School. After he graduated high school, he enlisted in the United State Marine Corp where he served his country proudly. After serving his country, Melvin received an Honorable Discharge.
Melvin later returned back home to be reunited with his family and old friends. He later relocated to Iowa where he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Ms. Voronica Butler and on September 22, 2016 they joined in marriage.
Melvin was self-employed as a mechanic. In his spare time, he loved watching wrestling and westerns. He also loved listening to the blues and spending time with his family and friends.
Those left to honor his memories include his wife, Voronica and their daughter Geonna of Davenport; other children: Zachary, Kareem, Polynesia, Levada, Gennell, and Melvina McDowell all of Georgia; stepson, Geovonta Butler of Davenport; brothers: C.W. McDowell, Shederick McDowell, Jr. (Mozell), Jerome McDowell, Roy Lee McDowell, Kenny Wilkinson (Carolyn) of Davenport and Steve McDowell; sister/cousin, Clara Caldwell; mother-in-law, Linda Butler and a favorite sister-in-law, Jessica Sutton of Davenport; uncles: Larry Adams, Albert Adams, Henry Hall and Robert L. Hall; aunts: Barbara Ann Rivers (Willie), Annette Passmore, Betty Jean Hall, Elizabeth Hall and Annie Ruth Hall, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. .
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents and a brother, Eddie Lewis McDowell.
