Melvin Harris, Sr

Funeral services celebrating the life of Melvin Sherdell Harris Sr, 72, of Davenport, will be held at 1pm on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Progressive Baptist Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Visitation will be from noon until time of services at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. 

Mr. Harris passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago. Arrangements entrusted to Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

Melvin was born May 31, 1952, in Gary, IN, a son of Sishman and Clotee (Hankins) Harris. He was united in marriage to Claudette Manyfield on April 8, 1977, in Gary.

Prior to his retirement, Melvin had been a welder for LTV Steel Company.

He was an honest man, and a family man, who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren deeply. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and cheering them on. He liked to go bowling, play basketball, and was a huge Minnesota Vikings fan.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife Claudette; children Shanita (Corey) Lamonte of Houston, Shanea (Dennis) Harris-Agbonoifo of Denton, TX, Sharena Harris of Davenport, Melvin (Kershanna) Harris Jr of Davenport, Melvia (Robert) Pride of Dallas, Michael and Marcus Harris of Davenport; 21 grandchildren; 8 greatgrandchildren; siblings Jesse Jones of Davenport, Karen Harris of San Antonio, Mavis (Mark) Murphy of Merrillville, IN, Reginald Harris of Davenport, Celena Dominguez of Gary, Monica (Andre) Hill of Davenport, Angela (George) Almodovar of Gary; and a host of loving extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Maria Harris, Michelle Harris, Cleofee Chisom, Linda White, and brother Karl Harris. May they rest in peace.
