Mary Young

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Mary E. Young, 97, of Davenport, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2021, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Her family will greet friends at church one hour prior to service time. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home assisted her family. Mary passed away Saturday, May 1, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s  Hospital or Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund.

Mary Ellen O’Day was born August 19, 1923, in Davenport to Gilbert and Augusta (Wagner) O’Day.  She was united in marriage to Maurice “Dale” Young in 1947. He preceded her in death,  January 30, 1992.

In 12th grade Mary worked part-time at the former Brammer Manufacturing making ammunition boxes during WWII. She had worked at the former Knotty Pine Lunch for many years and was a secretary for the former George Dilts Distributing.   Once her children were in school Mary found her calling as a Davenport crossing guard, safely ushering thousands of kids across busy streets for over 40 years, retiring in 2007.  Mary was a charter member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.

Survivors include her children; Kathy (Steve) Rowland, Mattoon, Illinois, Steve (Cindy) Young, Durant, Jill (Paul) Ryan, De Witt, Jeff (Donna) Young, Davenport and Shelly (Lance) Ricker, Farmington, Minnesota; her grandchildren; Melissa (Ben) Lierman, Annie (John) Rowland, Mary Ellen (Chris) Dorris, Russ (Justine) Young, Kevin (Laura) Young, Kate (Toni) Rietz, Ben Ryan, Colleen (Blaine) Campbell, Molly (Dalton) Ryan, Phil (Jackie) Young,  Pete (Hannah) Young, Emma (Lucas) Young, Leanne (Luke) Garner, Lanny Ricker and Mike Ricker; 29 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary O’Day and Mary Lou Young;  numerous loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Patty Jo, five sisters, Eleanor O’Day, Helen Miller, Pat Hansell, Shirley Platt and Margaret Ogden and two brothers, Wallace (Day) O’Day and Dick O’Day.  Mary’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caretakers from Heartland Hospice for their exemplary, compassionate care.
