Mary Jean Lanaghan, 90, of Davenport, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Kahl Home in Davenport, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Jean will take place at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Kahl Home, 6701 Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Visitation will be Wednesday prior to mass at the Kahl Home, from 9:00 until 11: 00 a.m., Burial will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mary Jean Coughlin was born on September 28 in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Paul J. and Helen (Gorman) Coughlin. She graduated from I.C.A. in 1945 and received her B.A. in English from Marycrest College. She attended graduate school at Loyola University in Chicago studying social work. She married David Mark Lanaghan in 1952 and they moved to Davenport in St. Paul’s parish, where their eight children were raised and educated. He preceded her in death December 30, 2014 after nearly 63 years together.
Mary Jean was an accomplished musician and fostered a home full of music. She enjoyed her years in the St. Paul’s choir and was an active and devoted parishioner. Her husband David was a founding member and the first President of the Iowa chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She was active in the early days in the Catholic Interfaith and Interracial Councils, the Catholic Worker House, and other organizations working toward social justice and human development in the local community. Mary Jean was a loving mother, whose life was her children. She found great joy sitting by a lake and enjoying the atmosphere.
Survivors include seven of her children: Kevin (Zeljka), Patrick (Tamara), Mark, Brian, Matt, Robert (Matthew Yanchuk), and Mary Helen. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Paul Gerard.
