Mary Behrens

Mary E. Behrens (Evans, Hurst), 73, of Davenport, died Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at her home surrounded by family.  Keeping with her wishes, cremation rites will take place and burial will be in Elwood Cemetery, Elwood, Iowa at a later date.

Mary Evans was born on December 5, 1949 in St. Louis, Missouri, a daughter of James T. and Marjorie A. (Suren) Evans.

Mary received her undergraduate degree in Education and went on to receive her master’s with emphasis in special education. Mary taught for 39 years with 22 of them in the Davenport School District.

Mary was united in marriage to Wayne Behrens on February 14, 2007.

Mary’s spare time was filled with her family and spending time with her grandchildren. She was an amazing caregiver operating her own daycare over 4 years while her grandchildren were young. She enjoyed traveling and new adventures. She enjoyed all kinds of music; often singing and humming along. She played clarinet with both CASI and the Tri-County Bands. She was also a devoted member of the CASI choir.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Wayne, stepson, John Behrens (wife Kelly), grandchildren Alisa Thompson (husband Carter), John Karl Behrens (wife Megan), great-grandson Colter Thompson, sister Ellen, sister-in-law Janet, brother Gary (wife Tami).

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Patrick, Robert and Thomas.
