Marilyn, fondly known as “Coo” by her friends and “Mumsie” by her family, left us with great memories and a smile on our faces on September 24, 2018. She was blessed with the greatest of lifelong friends and, while she lived on well after their passing, she never forgot them or the great life she was blessed to have led.
Coo was an avid volunteer, whether it be the local hospitals or charities. Coo loved to poke around in thrift stores for found treasures, and play a good game of Mahjong, Bridge or Rummikub. We will always remember her ever present inquiry: “Are we having fun yet?” She loved a great party and was known to her friends as the best of all-party planners and givers.
Marilyn was a long-time member of P.E.O (Philanthropic Educational Organization) and Kappa Kappa Gamma women’s sorority, forever saying, “Thank God for the Kappas!”
Marilyn McHugh was born November 15, 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of James and Edith (Smith) McHugh. She was a graduate of the University of Iowa and was united in marriage to Dr. John “Gordon” Rock, on March 23, 1946 in Chicago. He preceded her in death on September 28, 1987.
Survivors include her children Michael E. Rock, Davenport; daughter-in-law, Theresa Rock, San Tan Valley, AZ; Elizabeth “Betsy” Ruckman, Alexandria, VA; John Gordon Jr. “Chip” (Barbara) Rock, Oro Valley, AZ; Mary Terese Rock, Seattle, WA; and grandchildren Kelley, Michael, Sarah, and John Gordon Rock III.
In addition to her husband, Gordon, her daughter Anne, and brother James McHugh, preceded her in death.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Online donations can be made at https://www.stjude.org/donate.
