Margaret Mary Glancy was born on November 18, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan, a daughter of Thomas M. and Anna Irene (Powers) Glancy. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1939 and was a proud member of the ICA-lets, a group that continued to meet regularly for 70 years.
Margaret was united in marriage to Michael J. Gimbel, Sr. on October 14, 1943 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Davenport. They have shared a lifetime of marriage and memories before his passing on September 26, 2020.
Margaret worked for Davenport Catholic Charities and the Bettendorf Company before starting a family. While her children were students, she was very active at Holy Family Catholic School and was president of their Home and School Association and volunteered at Assumption High School. Being a wife, mother, and caretaker brought great joy to Margaret’s life. She was a caregiver to many of her family members as they aged and cared for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well. Margaret enjoyed hosting family celebrations and cooking wonderful meals for her family including delicious desserts.
Survivors include her children and their spouses: Mary Irene (George) Pitcher, Dr. Michael J. (Ruthann) Gimbel II, all of Bettendorf, Kathleen (Richard) Ott, Bloomington, Illinois, Dr. James (Sandy) Gimbel, Davenport, and Patricia (Paul) Tunink, Urbandale, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren; her sister, A. Eileen Matson, Davenport; a sister-in-law, Judy Glancy, Moline, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mary Anne Gimbel, her parents, and her brothers: Thomas, Raymond, and Patrick Glancy; sisters-in-law: Kay and Jean Marie Glancy; and brothers-in-law, Russell Thies and Jack Matson. May they rest in peace.
The Gimbel family would like to thank the Carmelite Sisters of the Kahl Home for all of the loving, compassionate, prayerful ministry given to Margaret.
