Manuel Lopez

Manuel “Manny” Lopez, 71, of Davenport, died Thursday, June 6, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family and dear friends following a courageous battle with ALS.

A Memorial Mass for Manuel will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial with military honors will be held in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.  Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2024 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home with additional visitation from 9 until 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.  Memorials may be made to I Am ALS (www.iamals.org/give/) or to the family to establish an educational fund for Manny’s grandchildren.

Manuel Fred Lopez was born on April 20, 1953 in Davenport, a son of Salvador and Joan (Garcia) Lopez.  He was a 1971 graduate of Central High School.  Following graduation, he joined the Army as a medic and was primarily stationed in Europe.  Following his honorable discharge he continued to serve in the Iowa National Guard.   Manny did an apprenticeship with ALCOA and continued his career there as an electrician, retiring in 2014.

Manuel was united in marriage to Jayne Mayer on September 22, 1979 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.  They have shared over 45 years of marriage and memories together.

Manny was a kind man, with a dry sense of humor that could catch you off guard.  He was a family man and cherished his grandchildren.   Through the years, Manny and his family enjoyed Saturday morning brunch at the homestead on Farnam Street. He was proud to come from such a large family.  He was an active member of the LULAC and a member of the VFW.  Manny participated in several sports, including running the BIX for 25 years, softball and Tuesday night pool league.  He was also a great fan of the Cubs, Hawkeyes, and Bears, and maybe the Dodgers and Dolphins too….  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jayne; sons: Michael (Heather Pearson) Lopez, Andrew (Olivia) Lopez, and Peter (Megan) Lopez, all of Davenport; grandchildren: Mylo, Aoife, and Baby Manny Lopez; his father, Salvador “Chavo” Lopez; siblings: Maria (Tim Dunker) Anderson, Salvador (Tumm) Lopez, Jr., Martin (Chris) Lopez, Matthew (Lynne) Lopez, Tom (Teresa) Lopez, Lisa (Decker Truesdell) Lopez, and Randy (LuAnn DeVol) Lopez, all of Davenport; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Jenni Pieper, Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, Chris (Janice) Mayer, Davenport, and Jackie Lusk, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother.
