Funeral Services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Loras H. Schafer, 93, a former resident of Long Grove and currently of Eldridge will be 10:30 am Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 16550-290th Street, Long Grove. Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Donahue American Legion Post, of which he was a member. The family will greet friends Tuesday from 4:00 until 6:00 pm at the church. There will be additional visitation Wednesday from 9:30 am until service.
The Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mr. Schafer died Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Grand Haven Retirement Center in Eldridge.
Loras Henry Schafer was born July 27, 1924 in Davenport, a son of, Henry J. and Eleanor (Tegeler) Schafer. He graduated from the former St. Ambrose Academy.
He was proud to have served our country in the US Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Kathleen Cecilia Stoltenberg on March 5, 1946 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Davenport. They had been blessed with 70-years of marriage at the time of her passing April 28, 2016.
Loras founded Schafer Electric Company in Long Grove and owned and operated the business until his retirement in 1990.
He was a member of the church and helped as a Presider’s Aid and Business Management Team; was an original officer of the Long Grove Civic League, as well as holding most offices.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the St. Ann’s Building Fund.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Grand Haven and the staff in the Moments Unit for their care and love.
Those left to honor his memory include children and their spouses, Mary (deceased) Patrick Sinnott; John Schafer, Davenport; Peggy (Bob) Hennings, Bettendorf; Nancy Schafer and Kathy Schafer, both of Eldridge; and Richard (Karen)Schafer, Blue Grass, Iowa; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Kathleen, a daughter Mary Sinnott, sisters, Lillian Schafer and Kathleen Waring, and a brother, Henry Schafer.
