Mr. O’Toole passed away Saturday, October 19, 2024, at UnityPoint Trinity, Rock Island. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family.
Loras was born July 20, 1937, in Dubuque, a son of William and Rosina (Schmidt) O’Toole. He was united in marriage to Theresa Kloppenborg on April 12, 1958, and she preceded him in death on July 18, 1998. He married Lynne (Johnson) Border on September 11, 1999, and she preceded him in death on December 19, 2019. Loras dated both Theresa and Lynne in high school and it appears to have been quite a contest. Theresa “won” the first round, and then re-introduced Loras and Lynne when she was diagnosed with terminal heart cancer. He always talked about how much he loved and missed his “wifs”.
Prior to his retirement in 1998, Loras had worked for 40 years as a product engineer for American Air Filter and McQuay International. He worked long and hard for them and they treated him well, but he always said he was planning for retirement the day he stepped in the door. They gave him that pleasure in 1998 after Theresa’s death, and he enjoyed a long and comfortable retirement with Lynne at his side.
He was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church and sang in the choir and Exultate Choir. He was also a member of Forever Young and volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity Restore and as a driver for the Mississippi Valley Blood Center.
In his spare time, he liked to tinker with everything and fix cuckoo clocks, lawnmowers and anything mechanical. He loved helping others whenever he could. He played golf (and sometimes enjoyed it) and walked his neighbor’s dogs to keep himself active. He enjoyed several fancy cars including a Datsun 280Z and a Mazda Miata and talked about getting another Miata long after he could drive one (properly).
The family is eternally grateful to those that helped him over the past few years whether it be providing nourishment, entertainment, helping him with the yard, or providing a soft place to land. It truly takes a village, and he was very happy in his.
Those left to honor his memory include his children Loras (Kathy Brewer) O’Toole Jr of Bozeman, MT, Mark (Linda) O’Toole of Johnston, IA, Kristi (fiancé Troy Stanga) Moody of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren Sean (Melissa) O'Toole, Ryan O'Toole, Nathan O'Toole, Heather (Chris) Medina, Michael O'Toole, Megen O’Toole (Zachary Brown), Kaitlyn O’Toole, Jasmine Brewer, Wil Moody, great grandchildren Rylynn, Brayden, Whitney, Keegan, Thomas, Brooklyn and Logan; siblings Dennis (Karen) O’Toole of Indianapolis, Diane (Tom) Keefe of Windsor, CO, and William (Linda) O’Toole of Davenport.
In addition to his wives Theresa and Lynne, he was preceded in death by his son John.
