Leo E. Peck

Leo Edward Peck, 95, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away on Friday, Feb. 14, 2025 with his beloved wife and youngest daughter by his side.

Leo was born on Sept. 6, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Clarence Edward Peck and Nellie Vera (Bliss) Peck. From an early age, his brilliant blue eyes reflected a curious mind and a heart full of dreams. He was a lifelong learner, always eager to explore new ideas, and a gifted conversationalist who could talk to anyone about anything. His sharp wit and dry, sarcastic sense of humor kept those around him entertained, and his laugh could fill a room.

After graduating from the Diocese of Sioux City Catholic schools in 1947, Leo attended the University of South Dakota, where he earned a business degree in 1952. His studies were briefly interrupted when he proudly served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in San Diego, California. Upon returning to USD, he became an active member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and carried the friendships and values he built there throughout his life.

Leo’s career in marketing and advertising took him across the country and even overseas. He worked for Case International Harvester before moving to John Deere, where he remained for the rest of his professional career. His work took him to Germany, and after returning to the Quad Cities, he married the love of his life, Renate Apfelbaum, on Dec. 26, 1972. Together, they built a life full of adventure—buying a farm, restoring their English-style home in Davenport, and traveling regularly to Europe.

Leo was a dreamer, but he also had the hands of a craftsman. He found joy in restoring classic cars, appreciating the beauty in every detail. He loved people and never met a stranger, forming friendships everywhere he went—from his career to his post-retirement breakfast crew at Sears. His children and grandchildren will forever cherish his warmth, humor, and the way he could make any gathering feel special.

Leo was a proud father to five children. From his first marriage, he had three children: Lee Anne Peck (Joe Coca) of Weston, Colorado; Jeffrey Edward Peck of Salt Lake City; and Megan LaForest (Steve) of Greeley, Colorado. Later, with Renate, he welcomed two more daughters: Janine Stichter (Craig) of Columbia, Missouri, and Sorcia Hanghian (Ryan) of Bettendorf, Iowa.

He adored being a grandfather and most recently took great joy in his time with his youngest grandson, Kellen Hanghian.

Leo is survived by his wife, Renate; his five children; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Fay Peck, and his sister Dolores Ann Peck.

A celebration of life to honor Leo will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements are made. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Nature Conservancy – Bison Conservation

Leo lived a life of curiosity, connection, and laughter. His stories, his dreams, and his love will live on in those who had the privilege of knowing him.
