Leo Cartee

April 10, 1938 — December 21, 2017

Leo “Al” Cartee, 79, a resident of Davenport, died Thursday, December 21, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He passed in the comfort of his home after a brief illness.

Al’s family will greet friends Tuesday, December 26, 2017 from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. Following Al’s request please dress comfortably or in Blue Devil attire. Private services will be held and burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.

Leo Albert Cartee was born April 10, 1938 in Davenport, a son of Arthur and Margaret Cartee. He was a 1956 graduate of the former Davenport High (Central High School) where he was a football standout. He then attended Coe College.

He was proud to have served our country in the US Airforce.

Al was united in marriage to Shirley K. Vens on April 11, 1964. She preceded him in death on September 14, 2007. They had been blessed with over 43-years of marriage at the time of her passing.

He was a federal employee, retiring after 37-years of service for the US Postal Service. He had also owned the former Crimmy’s Tap. In earlier years he was a member of the Davenport Moose Club.

Al and Shirley were both very supportive of their three boys and their grandchildren’s sporting events. They were proud to be there to witness their talents and see their growth both on and off the field. Following the death of Shirley Al became involved in Central Athletics working the different sporting events at the gate helping with tickets sales. He made many lasting friendships that he cherished. He became known as a “one man concession stand”, providing food and sandwiches at the events. His family wants to thank everyone who took the time to listen to his stories and jokes, as well as sharing a meal with him. He felt good feeding his friends; to the point of anonymous meals dropped at someone’s door step.

Memorials are suggested to the Annual Cartee Charity Golf Outing or to Davenport Central Baseball.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Chris (Cathy) Cartee and Rick Cartee, all of Davenport, and Kevin (Jennifer) Cartee, Peosta, Iowa; grandchildren, Chase, Colin (Jessie), Cameron, Bryce, Ryan, Brady, Jessica and Kale; sisters, Carol Walker, Davenport and Patty Gillam, Bettendorf; and numerous nieces and nephews.
