LaVerne Smith

Funeral Services for LaVerne M Smith, 92, of Davenport, will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice. LaVerne passed away unexpectedly Friday, December 29, 2017 at Genesis East, Davenport.

LaVerne Mary Shebanek was born on May 26, 1925 in Iowa City, a daughter of William P. and Imaline K. (Attig) Shebanek. She graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1943 and attended AIC Business College in Davenport. LaVerne was united in marriage to William S. Smith on November 11, 1950 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Davenport. Bill preceded her in death on March 21, 2011.

LaVerne had worked for the Chicago Ordinance District until World War II ended and then for various accounting firms before retiring in 1978. She was a 60 + year member of St. Paul the Apostle where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and Daughters of Isabella, and had also been a member of the Ladies of the Moose.

LaVerne and Bill enjoyed ballroom and square dancing, camping, and wintering in Arizona. She also loved to sew, cook and bake and decorate Christmas cookies with her grandsons.

Laverne is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, David (Cindy) Smith, Davenport, Alan (Karen) Smith, Mesa, Arizona, and Larry of Las Vegas, NV; grandsons, Brad, Tod, Adam (Tracy), Benjamin, and Zachary; great grandsons, Paul and Kenan; a sister Evelyn Green, Louisiana and several nieces & nephews.
