Karl was born to Josef and Hedwig Ungurean in Romania. The family moved to Austria several years later. Karl had many memories to share of his childhood during WWII.
In 1954 the family moved to Davenport, IA, under the sponsorship of his uncle. He and his father spent weeks walking downtown looking for jobs. Karl’s first job was pulling nails from a demolished house for $0.15 an hour.
Karl married Mary Kay Dahlberg in 1959. He became a citizen of the U.S. and was soon in the army. He and Kay lived in Munich, Germany during his 2 year tour of duty. Karl was then employed by the Uchtorff Company for 45 years, retiring as the senior applications engineer.
He was very active in the QCA running community. Karl was one of the founders of the Cornbelt Running Club in 1975 and the Bix race director in years 2 and 3. He was also the director of the annual 24 Hour Run for 38 years. Karl ran 56 marathons including the Boston Marathon twice and completed a 100K race.
Karl and Kay enjoyed many Habitat for Humanity mission trips nationally and internationally. They parented 5 foster children and he served on the Scott Country Foster Care Review Board for 16 years. As an active member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral he served on the Vestry, as a lay Eucharistic minister and an acolyte.
Karl was preceded in death by his parents, 3 siblings and a great-granddaughter. He is survived by his wife Kay, daughter Stephanie (Tom), daughter Kristen, son David (Colleen); grandchildren Jacob (Dana), Joseph (Jennifer), Anna, Alex, Jonathan and Hannah; great-grandchildren Mateo, Cruz, Mariana, Milo and Eliana.
Visitation is at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home on Dec. 27 from 3-7pm. The funeral service will be at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Dec. 28 at 10:30am with interment and luncheon to follow.
