Per her wishes cremation has been accorded and a visitation will be held from 3-6 pm on Thursday, February 27, at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. A private family Mass will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf, and burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s or Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Judy was born July 7, 1938, in Davenport, a daughter of Arthur “Art” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Plambeck) Schmidt. Judy’s family moved to DeWitt for several years, then moved back to Davenport in 1955, where she graduated from Davenport High School in 1957. On April 23, 1960, she married Steve Stephens at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Judy worked as a secretary for several firms, for several years until the first of their three children were born, and then was a stay-at-home super mom until they were adults. She began working at Genesis West in 1983 as a secretary in the outpatient clinic, retiring in 2000.
Judy loved being a mom to her and Steve’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and dearly loved family gatherings. She loved to decorate their home for the holidays, especially Christmas.
She was active in their kids’ activities, including the PTA, religious education teacher, Boy and Girl Scouts as a Leader, including going to lots of sporting and school events the kids, and eventually the grandkids and great grandkids, participated in.
Judy was a founding member of a “girls card club,” which started meeting after high school graduation, on a monthly basis for over 60 years.
She loved golfing, vacation trips, spending time with special friends and family, taking long walks, and entertaining their children, grandkids and great grandkids. She and Steve especially enjoyed traveling the US with their kids from coast to coast, including Hawaii. They particularly enjoyed Hilton Head, Ft. Pierce, FL, the UP of Michigan, and four trips to Australia to visit their son Dr. Scott and his family.
Judy is survived by her husband Steve; children Mike Stephens and wife Judy Trovrea of Davenport, Dr. Scott (Oksana) Stephens of Queensland, Australia, Lori (Bob) Boylan of New Mexico; grandchildren Tami (Mike) Gilyani of Milwaukee, Tony (Amber) Stephens of Davenport, Chase Stephens of North Carolina, Jake and Jade Boylan of New Mexico, Vladislav Stephens of Australia; great grandchildren Greyson, Emery, Steele, Gunner; and sister-in-law Judy (Jack) Radloff.
She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Harold and Lucile Stephens, sister Kathy Cirillo, and infant great grandson Brantley Walsh.
