John Mitchell

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for John A. Mitchell, 65, of Bettendorf, will be 10:30a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. Burial will take place in Davenport Memorial Park.  Visitation will be 4 until 7p.m. Tuesday at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.  Memorials may be made to the family.  John died Thursday, October 18 at Genesis East surrounded by his family.

John Allen Mitchell was born on May 27, 1953 in Davenport, a son of Harold and Caroline (Howard) Mitchell.  John worked at Titan Wheel formerly known as French & Hecht for over 30 years and was also part of the Machinist Union.  More recently he worked at Dillards.

John married Maria Segura on June 14, 1975 at Our Lady of Lourdes, Bettendorf. They later separated. From this union, three children were born, Tina, John, and Joseph.

John was devoted to his children, whether it was coaching Dad’s Club softball and soccer, as a Boy Scout Leader, or doing his part as a member of the Jackson Elementary PTA. His greatest achievement was seeing them go to college.

John loved sports, he was an avid fan of the Hawkeyes, Dolphins, Celtics, and Yankees.  He also enjoyed playing softball, bowling, and running.

Survivors include his children: Tina (Travis) Eygabroad, Rock Island, John Anthony (Shelley) Mitchell, Blue Grass, and Joseph Mitchell, Rock Island; step-son, Robert Sturgis, Davenport; grandchildren: Isabel, Elena Vallejo, Layla, Dominic, Chase, Hope Eygabroad, Jacob, Hannah, Meredith Mitchell; his father, Harold Mitchell; siblings: Harold “Mitch” (Charlotte) Mitchell, Jr., Mark (Lucene) Mitchell, all of Davenport, and Joy (Denis) Mussmann, Eldridge; a niece more like a daughter, Ashley Mitchell, Bettendorf; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother and an infant granddaughter.
