John Mayeski

January 12, 1941 — August 29, 2020

John Kent Mayeski, 79, of Rock Island, formerly of Bettendorf, died Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Friendship Manor in Rock Island.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, at a later date. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport.

John was born January 12, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of John Paul and Eleanor (Koch) Mayeski. He married Frances Elizabeth Gelven, May 21, 1966. John received his Bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University, his Masters of Library Science from the University of Michigan, and his Masters in Business Administration from Seattle University. John served his country in the United States Air Force at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington and the Air Force Academy Library in Colorado Springs.

Prior to his retirement in 2007, John provided leadership and dedication to numerous libraries. He was the Director of Learning Resources, College of the Redwoods, Eureka, California; Manager of the Professional Library, Cherry Creek School District, Aurora, Colorado; Library Director, University of Nebraska at Kearney; Library Personnel Officer at the University of Washington, Seattle and Executive Officer at the United States Air Force Academy Library in Colorado Springs. In the early years of his career, John was a high school English/Spanish teacher.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Fran; son, Mark (Kim) Mayeski of Bettendorf; granddaughters, Madelyn and Maya Mayeski; sisters, Janet Silies of St. Louis, Missouri, Joann Strawhun of Locust Grove, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents.
