John S. Martin

John S. Martin, 80, of Davenport, died Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services for John will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church, 1702 Iowa Street, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport with a time of sharing at 6:30 p.m. There will be additional visitation Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, or the Alzheimer’s Association, Quad Cities Chapter.

John Steven Martin was born on August 24, 1944 in Davenport, a son of Albert and Helen (Gress) Martin. He was a 1963 graduate of Davenport Central High School and was a proud Blue Devil; continuing to meet with fellow classmates on a monthly basis. John was united in marriage to Kathryn A. Murphy on July 26, 1975 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. This July they would have celebrated 50 years of marriage.

John worked for over 33 years at the Rock Island Arsenal primarily in Inventory Management retiring in 1998. Following retirement he went to work at the West Kimberly Hy-Vee for a time bagging groceries, a job he also held in his youth!

John enjoyed the outdoors, especially when he was on a bike. He completed many RAGBRI treks as well as TOMRV and Ride the River events. He loved Davenport and was a great historian of the city and was a member of the Scott County Historic Preservation Society. John also enjoyed listening to audiobooks.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Kathy, his daughter and son-in-law, Julie (James) Woods, all of Davenport; grandchildren: Cameron (Victoria Duff) Woods, Cedar Rapids, Daniel (Gianna Worley) Woods, St. Charles, Missouri, Isabella (Ruben Morales) Woods, Davenport; great- granddaughter, Solyse Morales; mother-in-law, Celeste Murphy, Long Grove, a sister-in-law, Judi Martin, Bettendorf, as well as all his Murphy brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Carolyn Doran and Robert Martin, father-in- law, Bill Murphy, and a brother-in-law, Paul Murphy. May they rest in peace.

The Martin family would like to thank everyone at Jane’s Place at C.A.S.I. as well as the nurses and staff of MercyOne-Genesis Hospice for the long and compassionate care they gave to John.
