John Richard "Dick" Manion

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for John Richard “Dick” Manion, 88, of Bettendorf, will be held at 10am Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1506 Brown St, Bettendorf.  Entombment will be in Davenport Memorial Park.  Visitation will be from 4-7pm Wednesday at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a prayer service and time of sharing starting at 4:30pm. There will be additional visitation from 9:30 – 10am Thursday at the church.  Memorials may be made to the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation or Genesis VNA Hospice.

 

Dick was born November 20, 1933, in Davenport, the only child of Walter J. “Honey” and Mildred A. (nee Mulcahy) Manion.  He was united in marriage to Kathleen Mirr on April 26, 1958, in Moline and later to Janette (nee James) Oberbeck on May 10, 1980 in Davenport. 

 

Dick passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 5, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

 

Dick earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from St. Ambrose and started his professional career as controller at J.I. Case, Bettendorf and retired as plant manager in 1989.  He then went on to become CEO of Sears Manufacturing Company, retiring in 2001.   He remained with Sears as a board member until 2020.  He also ran his own tax business for 50 years; was formerly the Treasurer for the city of Bettendorf; and was a board member of the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation.

 

He loved his family and friends and cherished the times spent with them, especially the family vacations to Florida and playing cribbage and euchre. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago White Sox.  He also enjoyed playing golf with friends and family and reading mystery novels.

 

Those left to honor his memory include his wife Janette; children Michele Gomez (Rusty Harris) of Lenexa, KS, Mike (Nancy) Manion of Bettendorf, Susan Manley (David Murdock) of Ft. Myers, FL, Clint Oberbeck of Amarillo, TX, Angela Oberbeck of Moline; grandchildren Heather Brown of Overland Park, KS, Andrea (Zac) Smith of Bettendorf, Kelsey (Bob) Jurkowski of Bettendorf, Christie (Zach) Frisch of Leawood, KS, , John Manley of New Berlin, WI, Simon Manley of New Berlin, WI, Sidney Oberbeck of Moline; and great grandchildren Ella, Ava, Charlotte, Ethan, Jack, Wyatt, Theo, Frances, and Izabella.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter, and his beloved mother, Mildred, son-in-law Gil Gomez, and granddaughter Jamie Gomez.
