In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Barbershop Harmony Society, 110 - 7th Ave N, Nashville, TN 37203 or Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 E. Ohio St, Chicago, IL 60611.
Growing up in Kinross, Iowa, where he was the eldest of six siblings, Amos attended North English High School and went on to graduate from the University of Iowa. In October of 1968, at a peace rally in Moline, IL, he asked a strawberry-blonde spitfire if she would lend him some change for gas. Amos and Cindy were married on April 28th, 1969. Amos would tell you she still takes his breath away... and not just because she was in charge of his oxygen tanks. Amos and Cindy raised their three loving daughters in Bettendorf. Amos retired from the Rock Island Arsenal after 41 years, where he did something with numbers, possibly? Even his family doesn't quite know what he did. Amos was a lifelong scholar, fascinated by research of all kinds, trivial facts and an avid lover of history. However if you knew Amos, you knew the list went God, Cindy, family, and barbershop music. It's unknown whether Amos loved the music or the family he found amongst the music more. He devoted 50 years as a member of The Davenport Chordbusters and Siouxland Discovery Chorus. Amos attended weekly practice until his final days. Life might be a toy store.. but to Amos it was Chords-R-Us.
He is preceded in joining the Lord by his mother & father (Elmer and Leona), brothers (Dean, George, & Robert), son-in-law (Jim Smith).
He will be deeply missed by the love of his life Cynthia; children, Kathryn (Jim) Smith of Independence, Iowa, Anna (William) Builta of Akron, Iowa, and Deborah (Andrew) Van Ommeren of Alton, Iowa; grandchildren, Halley Glanz (James Baugh), Madison Glanz-Guessford (Zachary Reynolds), Christian Glanz, Zander (Myranda) Smith, Alyssa Glanz, and Jazlyn Smith; great-grandchildren, Ariana Ramon, Remy & Banks Reynolds; sisters, Barbara (Jim) Schreffler and Betty (Thomas) Sadowski; many loving brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
May all who knew and loved him remember his quick wit, open-mindedness, positive attitude, love of fellow man, and humility. His final wish for everyone is to make time each day to be a blessing to someone else and make them smile.
