Janice Lee Burkley, 74, of Davenport, passed away peacefully May 29, 2020 at Manor Care.
A private visitation was held for immediate family. A memorial service for friends and extended family will be held at St. James Lutheran Church, Bettendorf, tentatively scheduled for November 21, 2020. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Janice was born on November 20, 1944 in Chicago, the daughter of Elvin and Geneva (Nylen) Willcox. She graduated from Main High School in Des Plaines, Ill., before moving to Iowa Falls, Iowa, and eventually raising her family in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Janice was very active at St. James Lutheran Church in Bettendorf, serving on the council and various committees, as well as teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, singing in the choir, and participating in book club. She also enjoyed spending time visiting and sharing stories with her family and friends. She was an avid reader, and she was proud to be a bookseller at Boarders Books & Music for 13 years. When she wasn’t reading in the summer, she was watching her beloved Cubbies play baseball, having grown up watching them in Chicago. To say she was overjoyed to see them win the 2016 World Series is an understatement.
Those left to honor her memory include daughters, Christine (Geordie) Gallagher, and Sarah (Zach) Peterson; grandchildren, Claudia, Grace, and Evelyn; brother Garry (Susan) Willcox; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Online tributes may be expressed at www.hmdfuneralhome.com.
