Jan died Saturday, October 12, 2024 at The Alverno, Clinton.
Janet Joan Tinnes was born on September 15, 1932 in Keota, Iowa, a daughter of Ralph J. and Gertrude (Rueter) Tinnes. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert B. Shetler on June 22, 1957 at St. James Catholic Church, Washington, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 18, 1978.
Following her husband’s passing, Jan went to work outside the home to support her family. After a brief stint at the Dairy Queen on State Street she went to work as a bookkeeper and from there to McDonalds. She also was a longtime crossing guard for the City of Bettendorf, she loved all the kids, and the kids returned that love for her. Additionally, Jan even had a paper route for the QC Times that she took over from her kids once they left home. Her tremendous work ethic impressed and inspired her children.
Jan was the matriarch and strength of her family. She had a kind, servant’s heart and joyful soul that would find that good side of things, but she could be a little ornery too! Jan also had great faith, she would religiously pray the rosary and was a longtime member of Our Lady of Lourdes parish, where she and her family could always be found in the front pew during Sunday worship. At Lourdes, she was a member of the Daughters of Isabel, worked funeral lunches, and ran the bingo games.
Those left to honor her memory are her children: Kevin (Mary) Shetler, Clive, Iowa, Carol (Randy) McDonough, Iowa City, Iowa, Mary (Tim) McDonough, Camanche, Iowa, and David (Jennifer) Shetler, Polk City, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one due in December; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis (Juergen) Butt, Hayward, Wisconsin.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Victor Tinnes and Rita Septer. May they rest in peace.
