James Determan, 77, a resident of Davenport, passed away Saturday, June 29th, 2024 at Lutheran Living Communities in Davenport.
On Friday July 12, visitation will begin at 9:00 AM and a 10:00 AM service will be held at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, Davenport with a burial at the St Mary’s Cemetery in Bryant followed by a celebration of life at 1:00 PM in Bryant. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Lung Association, American Heart Association or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
Affectionally known by friends and family as “JD”, James was born November 22, 1946 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Sylvester and Margaret (Naeve) Determan Wagemester. James was drafted into the Army and spent one tour in Vietnam. Upon returning from the war he met Carol (Maisch) Determan and on June 22, 1968 they were married in Prairie Village, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 23, 2020.
He completed a master’s degree at Iowa State University and remained a loyal Cyclones fan. He worked for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, retiring after a full civil service career in 2004. His work provided opportunities for assignments overseas to various military bases while he worked at the Des Moines, Salt Lake City, Washington D.C. and Minneapolis Regional Offices. They moved to Davenport the summer of 2007. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, skiing, and was avid tennis player and his “Determan Tennis Academy” annual holiday party was a fixture in the Quad Cities tennis community.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Nicole (Robert) Malandri of Lakewood, Colorado, and son, Jeremy (Lisa) Determan of Beaverton, Oregon; grandson, Quinn Determan; sisters, Mary Rife of Davenport, Carol (Clark) Ehlers of Davenport, and Denise (Gary) Schroeder of Bryant. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Carol (Maisch) Determan.
