Hubert Darlton Phillips was born on April 10, 1940 in Gloucester, Virginia, the son of Hubert and Mary (Blake) Phillips. He was united in love with Vicki Regginello for over 22 years. Phil retired from Caterpillar in 1988, but never really being a man of leisure, he returned to full-time work as a maintenance worker at Ridgecrest Retirement Village for an additional 30 years. Phil was the happiest when he was busy helping others, and he made it his top priority to be available to all the residents and staff at the retirement home. Staff and residents alike will always remember Phil for being kind, thoughtful and service driven.

Phil loved spending time with his family, especially his grand-daughters. A true super fan, you could find Phil on any given weekend watching his grand-daughters play soccer, compete in a show choir event, catching a volleyball match or helping them work on their archery techniques in the backyard. He loved holiday family dinners. He would often sit at the kitchen counter and critique the menu as his youngest grand-daughter prepared the meal. He could always be counted on to lend a hand when it came time to do the actual cooking. He loved to man the grill and bless him he saved many a juicy steak from an overly chargrilled death at the hands of his son-in law. His presence at family events will be deeply missed.

Phil enjoyed all types of sports. He loved watching the Hawkeyes play basketball and as a young man was a pretty good baseball player. Phil also enjoyed numerous outdoor sports; he liked hunting many types of game and was also an avid bass fisherman who loved spending every free moment trolling the river in his favorite boat. Phil was an accomplished archer having traveled throughout the U.S. for competitions. He acquired many awards and accolades in his time competing including an impressive ranking of 25th best in the nation in Archery. In addition to his archery skills Phil was also knew his way around a pool table. He loved a good game of pool; he became known around town as the “pool shark” to beat. Always looking to hustle up a game or two at any place that had a table, he was admired by many for his talents with a pool cue and his skill with working a table.

Phil had a lifelong love of travel. In his younger years he was known to hop on his touring motorcycle and hit the open road to catch all the sites the United States had to offer from coast to coast. Whether it was a simple drive up the road to his favorite coffee shop to chat with friends, up and down the river to find a new fishing hole or across the U.S. in search of new adventures; Phil surely loved being out and about in the world.

Phil will always be remembered for being the life of the party. Quick with a joke, or funny story he always knew how to make people laugh. His greatest pleasure in life was making people, especially his family and friends happy. Always the prankster, if you weren’t careful you might wake up one morning to find your car filled with toilet paper, a squirrel or perhaps some other form of furry wildlife just waiting to surprise you. Phil liked to keep everyone on their toes and was known by all his friends and family to be quite the teaser. Those are just a few of the traits that made him so beloved to so many people. His silly jokes, humorous stories and perfectly executed pranks will be greatly missed.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife Vicki, and their children Jennifer (Aaron) Henderson, Shueyville, Iowa, and Erick Saltz, Davenport; two grand-daughters; Avery and Mia; his siblings; Carlton (Debbie) Phillips, their son Doug, and his sons Cory and DJ; his sister-in-law Barbara Phillips, and Aunt Francis and cousins, Juanita and Charlene all of Woodbridge, Virginia; his niece, Trinette Richardson, Big Rock, Iowa. as well as numerous loving cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Mary Phillips and a brother, Wayne Phillips.
