Mr. Vieth died peacefully at home with family beside him on Friday, June 7, 2024.

George Walter Vieth was born on December 13, 1931 in Davenport, a son of Walter E. and Irene (Horn) Vieth. He graduated from the University of Iowa and later earned his MBA from Iowa as well. George proudly served our county in the Air Force from 1953 until 1956 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He piloted troop and cargo transport planes in the United States, Europe and Asia.

George married Jane Bettendorf on September 4, 1954 at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. They were a happy, fun-loving couple for nearly 70 years and greatly enjoyed family life with their four children. An avid hunter, fisherman and Harley Davidson enthusiast, George thrived outdoors.

Returning to Davenport after the Air Force, George joined his father at Vieth, Duncan & Wood, an investment banking firm they managed together. He later acquired Joy State Bank in Joy, Illinois where he was President. He also held that position at Old Farmers and Merchants State Bank, Hillsdale, Illinois, retiring in the late 1980’s.

George expressed his gratitude by serving the community as president of the Scott County Y, the Davenport Rotary Club, and the Davenport Chamber of Commerce. He chaired the board of St. Luke’s Hospital and served on the boards of the Genesis Hospital and Health System, the Genesis Foundation, and the Mississippi Valley Fair. He was also a past member of the financial advisory board for the Clarissa C. Cook Home.

Humble before God, George was a man of great faith, bestowed upon him by his parents and the legacy of his Lutheran minister grandfather. He was an elder at Trinity Lutheran Church for many years and then a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

George joined Crow Valley Golf Club as one of its first members and was also a member of Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club, Jupiter, Florida, Rod and Gun Club, Davenport, Swan Lake Duck Club in Henry Illinois, and the Union League Club in Chicago.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jane, Davenport; children and their spouses: George (Laurie) Vieth, Jr. Louisville, Kentucky, Charlie (Claudia) Vieth, Baltimore, Maryland, Tom (Susan) Vieth, Bourdeilles, France, and Carolyn (Brian) Langham, Union Pier, Michigan; grandchildren: Emily (Chad) Singer, Tom (Kerry) Vieth, Irene Vieth, Charles Vieth, Jr., Caitlin Vieth, William (Emily) Vieth, Jane (Ryan) Bauer, Jackson (Michaela) Langham; and five great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: G. Duane “Bud” Vieth and Marjorie Kimmel.
