Ernesto C. Gonzales, M.D., 78, a resident of Davenport, died Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Trinity Hospital in Rock Island.
The funeral service and Mass of Christian Burial for Dr. Gonzales will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Davenport. The Mass will be livestreamed by clicking the following link : St. Paul the Apostle Facebook Page The burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Davenport. Visitation will be held Monday from 4 until 6 p.m. with a prayer service offered at 6 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport. Additional visitation will be held Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass in the gathering space at church. Memorials may be made to the Assumption Foundation for K-12 Schools.
Ernesto Castillo Gonzales was born on November 7, 1944 in Cabuloan, Pangasinan, Philippines, a son of Gregorio and Carmen (Castillo) Gonzales. He graduated from the University of Santo Tomas College of Medicine in the Philippines in 1969. Dr. Gonzales came to the United States in 1971 to do his internship at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and completed his anesthesiology residency in Harlem Hospital, New York before completing a fellowship in anesthesiology, specializing in open heart and critical care medicine, at the University of Iowa.
Following his fellowship, he practiced in Clinton, Iowa before moving to Davenport in 1977. Dr. Gonzales practiced until his retirement in 1995.
Dr. Gonzales was united in marriage to Eleonor Mendoza, M.D. on June 8, 1980 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline.
Dr. Gonzales had belonged to the Filipino American Association of the Quad Cities and the American Medical Association.
He had a passion for photography and traveling to Europe in places of historical significance. He also enjoyed keeping up with current events, watching James Bond movies, listening to opera music, and spending time with his family. Dr. Gonzales was an avid sports fan, especially of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.
He is survived by his wife, Eleonor Mendoza-Gonzales, M.D., Davenport; sons, Philip Gonzales, M.D., C.P.A., Louisville, Kentucky, and Charles “Rick” (April) Gonzales, M.D., St. Louis, Missouri; grandson, Luke William Gonzales (9 months); a brother, Elpidio Gonzales; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Tan Gonzales.
