Donald “Don” W. McGuiness, 89, of Bettendorf, passed away Sunday January 26, 2025. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Friday, February 7, 0225, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Thursday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Additional visitation will be 9 am until time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the McAnthony Window.
Don was born July 17, 1935, in Clinton, the son of C.H. “Cyrus Hugh” and Helen (Streib) McGuiness. He graduated from Des Moines Dowling High School in 1953 and Iowa State University in 1957 with an Electrical Engineering Degree. It was at the beginning of his Senior year at Dowling, at a back-to-school dance, where Don met a young girl by the name of Shirley Ann Zilko. And so began their love story and life adventure. They were united in marriage September 7, 1957.
He served in the Army Reserves. He was co-owner of Torrance Electric and Engineering Co., Rock Island. He never wore a watch, but he was always on time. He always believed in putting in an honest day’s work, when not at work you might find him on the golf course. He absolutely loved the game, learning from his father and brother; he made the Iowa State golf team as a “lefty.” He served as President of the Davenport Country Club, was a member at Rock Island Arsenal and Plantation Golf and Country Club, Venice, FL.
Don loved all sports, a Cub fan for life and even cheered for the Hawkeyes when they weren’t playing his Cyclones. He coached his girls’ middle school basketball teams and his son’s baseball team. He was President of the Sacred Heart School Board.
It seemed he always had some weekend project he was working on whether getting that putting green poured in the back yard or building a deck for many Bix 7 parties. He enjoyed a good game of bridge and hear tell was quite the dancer.
Don was the family patriarch and our rock; he will be deeply missed.
Don is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley; daughters, Laurie (Mark) Bakkum of Cedar Rapids, Kelly (Doug) Ouverson of Naples, FL; Christine (Shane) Hammes of East Moline; daughter-in-law Karen McGuiness of Columbus Junction, IA; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, John of Venice, FL, Michael (Mickie) of Hayward, WI; sister, Martha McGuiness of Des Moines; a nephew; and several nieces.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Mark, mother-in-law Kathryn Zilko and sister-in -law Pat McGuiness.
The family wants to thank the staff at The Fountains Senior Living in Bettendorf and St. Croix Hospice for their tender and loving care.
