Donald Edward Anderson was born on November 20, 1932 in Davenport, a son of LeRoy Hartwin and Grace Dorothy (Geurtsen) Anderson. He graduated from St. Ambrose Academy in 1951. He proudly served our country in the Naval Reserves for 16 years, participating in the Naval blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis and also served on the U.S.S. Midway before his discharge as a 1st Class Petty Officer.
Don was united in marriage to Marelu Hallauer on May 1, 1954 at Holy Family Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on February 13, 2018 following almost 64 years of marriage.
Don was a 50-year member of Bricklayers Union Local 6, working as a brick mason for Waters Construction and later retired from the City of Davenport as a concrete foreman. Don worked on many local projects including on the team that built the foundational pillars of the I-80 Bridge, the former observation deck of the QC Airport, Scott County Park pavilions and fireplaces, all of the North Scott School District Elementary Schools, Assumption High School, St. John Vianney Parish, the grotto stone wall behind the altar at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, as well as the “famous” wishing well at 901 Fillmore.
Don was a very active parishioner and jack of all trades at the former St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was often spotted saying his prayers on the riding lawnmower behind the parish.
Don was also an active volunteer with the Friendly House, driving for the Mississippi Valley Blood bank, and was a Boy Scouts Scoutmaster for Troop 35. He was extremely proud of his four sons and four grandchildren who earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Don enjoyed spending over 30 years at his cabin on Lake Odessa, spending many days fishing and trapping turtles. He also enjoyed goose hunting with friends.
Those left to honor his memory include his children: Wallace (Teresa) Anderson, Davenport, Lawrence “Lars” (Jeff Greenberg) Anderson, Los Angeles, Thomas (Marianne), Davenport, Constance (Michael) Heskett, Springfield, Illinois, and John (Leanne) Anderson, Davenport; as well as ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and a brother and sister-in-law, Richard (Joyce) Anderson, Walcott.
In addition to his wife, Don was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David. May they rest in peace.
