Dawson was born on December 30 ,1939 in Calamus, Iowa, a son of Yvonne (Snyder) and Gilbert Pewe, Sr. He proudly served our country as a jet mechanic in the Air Force from 1959 until 1963, primarily stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. Dawson was united in marriage to Sandy (Day) on March 26, 1966. She preceded him in death on February 1, 2021 following 55 years of marriage.

Dawson worked as a unit supervisor at ALCOA for 32 years, retiring in 1995. He enjoyed fishing, camping, watching recorded shows (to avoid commercials), and trips to the casino with his bride, Sandy. More than anything, Dawson enjoyed helping people. Referring to him as a handyman was an understatement. He could fix anything. Dawson frequently volunteered his time, expertise and money to help any in need. Dawson also helped others through donating blood, accumulating donation totals greater than 23 gallons.
