Dale LeRoy Long, 89, of Blue Grass, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at his home. The rite of cremation was accorded through Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, and inurnment was in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, along with his wife BettyAnn.
Dale was born on September 28, 1935, in Dallas, IA, the son of Clarence E. and Flossie O. (Day) Long. He earned his doctorate in psychology from Drake University. He was united in marriage to BettyAnn Gustafson in April of 1967, and she preceded him in death on April 12, 2018.
Prior to his retirement, Dale had been a corrections officer for 30 years.
He was a veteran, serving in the Army from 1958-1960.
He enjoyed reading books about the Wild West and history, collecting coins, and renovating houses.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter Susan (Aaron) Barber of West Topsham, VT; son Brian Long of Connecticut; grandchildren Andrew Barber, Nathan Barber, and Kiersten (Dylan) Huntley; and great grandchildren Mya, Xander, and Elijah.
Additionally, he was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert, Clarence, Marion, and Richard Long, and sister Alberta Sandquist.
