Charles L. “Chuck” Roeder, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and respected member of the Davenport community, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2024, at Bickford Cottage, Davenport, at the age of 85. Chuck's life will be celebrated at funeral services to be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport, with burial to follow at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military honors. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 until 6 p.m. at the funeral home, with additional visitation on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 26.
Charles Lloyd Roeder was born on August 17, 1938, in Maquoketa, Iowa, a son of Kenneth and Florence (Burkert) Roeder. Chuck grew up and attended school in Bellevue and Andrew, Iowa.
Chuck graduated from Andrew High School and later attended Loras College before enlisting in the Navy. He proudly served seven years in the US Naval Reserves from 1956-1962, serving as Weapons Office Yeoman aboard the USS Canberra, a flagship for President Eisenhower’s People to People Round the World Cruise.
After his military service, Chuck enrolled at St. Ambrose College, where he earned a degree in history. He later served as the President of the St. Ambrose Alumni Association.
In February 1964, Chuck married Judith Winge, and they had two children together. Chuck's dedication to his family was evident throughout his life, and though they later divorced, he maintained a deep love for his children and grandchildren. Chuck found love again and on February 14, 2004, he married Pamela L. (Donaldson) Wyderka in Las Vegas, Nevada. They recently celebrated 20 years of marriage.
Chucks professional journey began with aspirations to teach, but he discovered his talent and passion for sales. He worked in the insurance industry, starting with Connecticut Mutual and later spending much of his career with Riepe, Buchanan, and Piper, which merged with Marsh & McLennan Companies. Chuck retired in 2009 as Executive Director of Sales.
Chuck had a passion for golf that extended beyond leisure; he co-owned a golf store called Nevada Bob's Discount Golf for several years in the 1990s. His love for the sport was further exemplified by his participation in the Quad City Classic Pro-Am tournament, now known as the John Deere Classic, where he had the opportunity to play alongside professionals.
Chuck was a dedicated member of the community, belonging to various organizations such as the Lions Club, American Legion Post 26, Crow Valley Golf Club, and the Outing Club. He had a remarkable sense of humor and an ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Chuck enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He adored his dogs and was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago Cubs.
Chuck will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Pam; children: Ann (Randy) Clark of Carmel, Indiana, John (Simona) Roeder of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and P.J. (Kaja) Wyderka of New York, New York; grandchildren: Ryan (MacKenzie), Lauren, and Noelle Clark of Carmel, Indiana, Dylan and Nathan Roeder of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Vivian Wyderka of New York, New York; a sister, Cindy (Norlan) Hinke of DeWitt; numerous nieces and nephews, and a special cousin, Connie Kindig of Davenport.
