She was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 11, 1946 to Mortimer I. Kassewitz and Frances I. Beal. They moved to Davenport, Iowa six months later, where she attended McKinley Elementary and Sudlow Junior High schools. She graduated in 1964 from Davenport Central High School and later EICC Nursing School, receiving her LPN in August of 1965.
She married Gary Don Luksetich in August of 1967, but later divorced in 1974. While raising two kids, she returned to school to earn her Associate’s Degree in Accounting at AIC.
Carol married the love of her life, Larry Hichborn, in 1995 and were together until his death in 2012. That same year she retired from the Rock Island Arsenal after 25 years working in the Health Department.
In her earlier years, Carol enjoyed playing tennis, golf, softball, and pool. She was also a veracious reader and enjoyed 50’s and 60’s music. She loved animals, especially her cat Quincey, her closest confidante.
She was fortunate enough to reconnect with old friends and new friends from her Central High School class of 1964. She also loved swimming in her good friend Sandy’s pool.
Carol’s survivors include a son Tim Luksetich (Celeste), daughter Holly Baker (Sean), grandchildren A.J., Aliyah, Colleen, and Nicholas, her brother Phillip Kassewitz, and sister-in-law Connie Kassewitz, and sister-in-law/best friend Wineva Harrington.
A special thank you to all of her relatives and friends that helped care for her during her brave fight with this terrible disease. Additional thanks to the health care professionals who cared for her at the end, allowing her to pass with dignity and comfort.
