Carol L Black, age 81, of Davenport passed away April 2, 2023 at The Fountains where she went to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her loved ones.

Carol was born on January 16, 1942 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Eileen (Huntsinger) Riley. She was united in marriage to Delbert Black Jr. on August 25,1962. To this union they were blessed with three daughters. He preceded her in death on June 2,1995.

Carol graduated from Aquinas High School in Ft Madison and then attended Mercy Medical School to obtain her nursing degree. While in school she met her future husband on a blind date. On this date he was so nervous, he ran three red lights, a story she loved to share.

After obtaining her degree she worked at St. Luke’s which later became Genesis East where she worked as a pediatric nurse for 38 years as she cared for countless children. Her care and kindness for her patients was unparalleled. While working there she was involved with the children’s cancer support group The Candlelighter’s. She was also on the Foster Care Review Board for 10 years. She volunteered her time working at the American Cancer Society’s Discovery Shop for 7 years. She was a member of St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

Carol loved to keep her hands ever busy. She was an accomplished seamstress making many clothes and costumes for her children and grandchildren. Her hands were constantly busy either knitting, crocheting and creating priceless gifts for family and friends. She also loved being outside to “play in the dirt” planting flowers and watching humming birds. She enjoyed all kinds of games either cards or board games where lots of laughter was had with her family and friends.

A few years after retiring she moved to Mesa, AZ. While there she enjoyed meeting many new friends and found a passion for quilting and made special quilts for her great grandchildren. She had fun playing shuffle board, and time spent with her quilting club.

Carol had the most kind, sweet personality with patience beyond measure. She met everyone with a smile that lit up the room and with a giggle that just made you smile. Her open arms always gave the very best hugs and you knew you were loved in her embrace that will forever be remembered and missed.

Special thanks to all of the kind and caring staff at The Fountains, Bettendorf, IA. Their kindness and caring are more appreciated than can be put into words.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband and sister Nancy.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Anne (Jeff) Ferguson, Maquoketa, Deborah Black, Abilene, TX; and Christine (Mark) Gordon, Springdale, AR. Grandchildren, Lindsay Ferguson (Kyle Nicholson); Stephen (Aubrie) Ferguson; Emma (David) Fulmer, Mara Wohlers, Ashley (Jordan) Kirk, Mackenzie Gordon (Wayd Thomas) and 9 great grandchildren Brother, Brad (Nancy) Riley, St. Louis, MO; Sister, Kathy (Kevin) Miller, Norway, IA and many nieces and nephews.
