Margaret Bernadine “Bernie” (Leonard) Bettini passed away on April 17, 2024 at 103 years old.  She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernie will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2024 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at church.  Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. 

Margaret Bernadine (Bernie) Leonard Bettini was born in 1920 in Davenport, Iowa to Michael Joseph Leonard and Agnes Dwyer Leonard. All of her four grandparents came from Ireland and she was proud of her Irish heritage. She was the eighth child of a family of 9 children. Bernie attended Saint Paul’s Catholic Grade School. In 1930, when her family lost their money in the great depression, they moved to a farm in Grand Mound, Iowa, where they lived and farmed until 1992. Bernie attended Immaculate Conception Academy in Davenport and graduated from there. During World War Two, she enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945, and served as a Yeoman until 1946. She was very proud to be a veteran of World War Two. She then used the G.I. Bill of Rights to attend Marycrest College in Davenport for 3 years. 

Bernie met and married Joseph G. Bettini in 1950 and they had a happy marriage for 65 years living in Davenport, Iowa. Joe was a graduate of Saint Ambrose College, and later the controller for 36 years for M.A. Ford Manufacturing Company in Davenport, Iowa. They were long-time members of Holy Family Parish and all of their children attended Holy Family Grade School and Assumption High School. In later years, they attended St. Anthony’s Church in Davenport. 

She is preceded in death by her husband Joe, her daughter Gina Marie Bettini Major, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, her parents, her brothers and sisters John, Ray, and Kay Leonard, Grand Mound, Iowa, Sister Mary Aquin, Clinton, Iowa, Virginia (Martin) McCarthy, Davenport, Iowa, Joseph (Irene) Leonard, Solon, Iowa, and Francis (Mary Louise) Leonard, Davenport, Iowa. 

She is survived by her sister Jean Ann (Jerry) Tonn of Davenport, Iowa, and by her 6 children: Colleen Bettini (Dan Laake) New Berlin, Wisconsin, Anne Brockel (Larry) Genesee, Wisconsin, Meg Woehrle (Steve) Donahue, Iowa, Brian Bettini (Gina) Davenport, Iowa, Angela Ray (Dan) Middle Amana, Iowa, and Kay Patch (Doug) Davenport, Iowa. She greatly enjoyed her 14 grandchildren: Joseph Woehrle, Bettendorf, Iowa, Kim Woehrle, Bettendorf, Iowa, Ellen Bettini Scott (P.J.) Davenport, Iowa, Paula Bettini Arnold (Matthew) Davenport, Iowa, Christina Bettini, Des Moines, Iowa, Nicholas Major (Jennifer Sorensen), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Benjamin Major (Laura Grotte), Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Kevin Brockel, Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Cari-ann Brockel, Genesee, Wisconsin, K.C. Brockel, Marquette, Michigan, Celeste Ray, Amana, Iowa, Giselle Ray Distad (Ben), Bend, Oregon, Steffany Patch Dietz (Ryan) Eldridge, Iowa, and Chad Patch, Austin, Texas. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren. 

The family wishes to thank the staff at Senior Star Assisted Living and Genesis Hospice for their care of our Mother/Grandmother.
